well, you got issues hell, I got issues
we all got issues to rattle on upon
take 1-2-3 steps back until you realize that
these little bits of our lives are tied up as one

you gotta know when to speak up you gotta know when to shut up
you gotta know when to take charge know when to go with the flow
bang out a little fun on your Mardi Gras drum
learn how to take a joke and let the good times roll

and find someone to rattle on your psychobabylon
it all appears to me to be funky see funky do

so don't ya put a wall up don't ya let your guard down
just kick off your shoes dance a mean boogaloo
don't spend all your life's desires save some for the campfires
and don't be fooled into thinking it through

so go ahead and seize the day be aware of bad schway
and always carry change for a hundred dollar bill
learn how to play a hunch spot the royal nonesuch
let 'em scam you first like they always will

Now some say it's all in God's plan some say it's all numbers man
I say just put your fingers down where that melody lies
take 1-2-3 steps back until you realize that
it's all tied up as one these little bits of our lives

so, you got issues hell, I got issues
we all got issues to rattle on upon
take 1-2-3 steps back until you realize that
these little bits of our lives are tied up as one

little wheel keep a rollin' me home
little wheel keep a rollin' me home
the big wheels think they got you runnin'
but it's the little wheel that keeps 'em rollin' on

little wheel now don't you do me wrong
little wheel now don't you do me wrong
without you a rollin' down the road don't you know
I'd be no rolling stone

the big wheels got you runnin' big wheels rollin' slow
big wheels got all the money the big wheels got all the gold
but it's the little wheel keeps 'em rollin on
without you a rollin' down the road don't you know
I'd be no rolling stone

now the road makes you money the road makes you alone
the road take you nowhere then the road will bring you back home
on the little wheel now don't you do me wrong
the big wheels they think they got you runnin
but it's the little wheel that keeps 'em rollin on

Whoa, I can't get nuthin' done in this hot texas sun
today was brutal tomorrow the same
sitting around just a waitin' for rain

40 days and 40 nights a 100 degrees no end in sight
finding shade the name of the game
sitting round just a waitin' for rain

so cut the top off of your chevy
and put another sandbag on the levee
jokin' about it eases the pain
of sittin' round just a waitin' for rain

see the church see the steeple open dem doors let in all the people
a good man dies it's a cryin' shame
hey champ when you get to heaven
tell 'em texas needs rain

5. Damage Alley

like a self-contained mofo like an urban who-de-doo
like a discipline disciple baby of living without you
like a downtown hudu guru of a parley not yet met
like a radical reaction to working without a net

like jammin with the traffic bands and sitting in with bros
playin dirty licks with broken sticks like an urban mofo
like a fancy gandy dancer working on a railway line
like a randy romancer who's got the wheels just not the time

you see I live inside atomic city I hear them church bells chime
I live inside an old hotel watchin ghosts as they mime
I'm a product of la-de-dah I'm the outcome of the test
and I take about half my chances kindly disregard the rest

and I work damage alley I crawl from street to street
I see broken men I see time machines groove to make ends meet
I'm a reaction to the attitude of a positive display
and I read all the papers and I don't believe a single word they say

so I went to see the gypsy her name was Mom Monique
I told her to tell me tell me anything she sees
she saw me in boots and quivers playing a sad clarinet
in a place called Damage Alley and that's as far as she could get

I'm a self-contained mofo an urban who-de-doo
a discipline disciple baby livin without you
a downtwon hudu guru of a parley not yet met
in the place called DAMAGE ALLEY and that's as far as I can get

the criminal return to the scene of the crime
he's last night's party still fresh on his mind
just another showbiz bum on the run
but there ain't no Law against having too much fun

I'm talking pocket rocket fuel I'm talking tit for tat
talking hitting grand slams every time at bat
scoring bit gime betting on the come
but there ain't no Law against having too much fun

radiator in the morning percolator at night
mix some wine with the kerosene give the smoke a light
can't you hear your daddy just a tellin you son
that there ain't no Law against having too much fun

7. Born to Sway

born to sway with the wind
and play in the wind tonight

born to sway with the tide
by this Texas seaside tonight
and as the storm blows on through
I will be thinking of you tonight

the strong they sway with the wind
and bathe in the wind tonight
the strong they sway with the tide
sit back and enjoy the ride tonight
and as the storm blows on through
I will be thinking of you tonight

Bridge
and I can't stand still
at the top of this hill tonight

'cuz I was born to sway with wind
and play in the wind tonight
born to sway with the tide
sit back and enjoy the ride tonight
and as the storm blows on through
I will be thinking of you tonight
and if this wind settles down
I might up and have to leave town…tonight

hanging out in the alley flowers in hand
he can't go inside no it's not in the plan
then the little old man guarding the door
finally dozes off and begins to snore
Jonny sneaks in to catch the last act about to begin
the one where she kills the leading man
Stage Door Jonny

she bows when they meet he kisses her hand
she fingers his palm tonight he's her man
the limo pulls up they slip inside
she kicks off her shoes sez let's go for a ride
he pours her a drinks she sips it and sighs
gives him a kiss tongue on the sly
for Stage Door Jonny

Jonny Jonny Jonny Jonny Whoops Jonny Whoops Jonny Jonny Jonny…

back at her place she turns on the lights
poser of Godard and those Paris nights
itchin' to please and please him she might
something more comfortable ooh what a sight
for Stage Door Jonny

9. Great Big World

you might have known I'd sidestep the question
you might have known I might lie
anything to get me out of this western
and these pistols hangin' at my side

it was down by the bend of the river
way out past the end of town
it was there when suddenly I remembered
the smell of powder in the air and blood on the ground

it's a great big world in my little mind
all she had to say was wait a little longer next time
and that pale pink light did shine
on this great big world in my little mind

now the town's all gussied up for a hangin'
I never said I had nothing to hide
Mexican music pours out of the bordello
I stand real still wait for a sing

one mississippi two mississippi
ah hell why couldn't I've left Texas behind
left brain right brain I dunno mister
it all adds up to half a mind

it's a great big world in my little mind
all she had to say was wait a little longer next time
and that pale pink light did shine
on this great big world in my little mind
all she had to tell me was wait a little longer next time
and that pale pink light her windows did shine
on this great big world in my little mind

10. Anasazi

I'm travelling through some sort of hallway
standing naked in 10 below
I'm channeling Anasazi

the boys in the band they're sittin' round smokin'
laughin' leanin' up against the wall and jokin'
dressed up all in their gig finery
they're channeling Anasazi

I said we're sitting here wasting time talkin'
we should be out there on the street rockin'
with the broken, the fixed, and the free
channeling Anasazi

it's playin' with my mind like fire and ice
playin' with my time at twice the price
playin' with my fingers like Leadbelly
channelling Anasazi

like Grandaddy long legs through fields of grain
terrified forced to flee the plain
a thousand years of prehistory
channelling Anasazi

ooh we ah we
ooh we ah we ooh

11. Slowing Down Sunset

© 2006 Paul Pearcy

Through the Oregon mountains on a train bound for Frisco
the conductor collects all the debts left behind
from a mountainous seaport through a dusty old tunnel
the sunrise behind us leaves the moonrise to find

now out in the forest I see a lonely red fir tree
in a field full of fir trees the others are green
but this lonely red fir tree sits atop of a hill
with a view of the ocean the other trees can't see

we're slowing down sunset as we climb up the mountain
we're slowing down sunset as we chug up the pass
we're slowing down sunset on a train bound for Frisco
slowing down sunset trying to make the day last

now this girl on the train she fell in love with an outlaw
spent three years in prison for something he did wrong
but the girl on the train says she's happy now though
she's got a hundred bucks American and a free train ride home

she got a good tan while she was in prison
wrote a lot of letters spent time alone
she read a lot of books fell out of love with an outlaw
now she's slowing down sunsets on a train bound for home

CHORUS

imagine yourself all alone in the forest
imagine yourself spending three years in jail
oh imagine yourself on a train bound for Frisco
slowing down sunsets and riding the rails

CHORUS

12. Houseboats and Chinese Lanterns

why is it always…

I'm dreaming of houseboats and Chinese lanterns
sitting on a lake olive green
listening to the sounds of the night beneath Chinese lanterns
when slowly she turns and says to me

why is it always a place you'll never be
why is it always the face you cannot see
beneath Chinese lanterns

now when she was a young girl she had a saddle pony
they'd go riding along that lake among the reeds
and that mean ol' goose the scar on her shoulder
the one often rumoured the one seldom seen

CHORUS

then the image clears those aren't house boats
those aren't Chinese lanterns those are lifeboats
and those are flares and I'm on the bow of a ship
sinking…

then an angel beside me with a scar on her shoulder
slowly she turns and touches me

CHORUS

dreaming of houseboats and Chinese lanterns
get a good night's sleep…
